I don’t agree with every word (for example, the comment about Blackout days) but this is an outstanding summary from The Atlantic.

Here is my summary. In the Jim Crow South, a black man on a sidewalk was expected to step aside when a white man approached. A black man who did not would be punished. To the media, and much of America, Sandman's offense was to not step aside.

More.  This is exactly the point. More important than the bile and the resentment the “punch a child” frenzy reveals is the the thoughtlessness. No-one who jumped on this applied any independent thought, or felt the need for more evidence. Stimulus, response. We are seeing Richard Hofstadter's “paranoid style” and “100% mentality” combine, and take over a large fraction of the culture.
